Arbanassi – remnants of past fame

Founded in the 15c on a rocky plateau 4 km from Veliko Tarnovo, Arbanassi developed into a prosperous town of wealthy merchant families. In the 16-17c. Arbanassi reached the peak of its prosperity. It was exempted by many taxes and from the restrictions for building churches. The number of houses reached 1000. Stock-breeding, handcraft and trade were flourishing in those days. After the village was ravaged by karjalii bands in 18c. most of the merchant families fled it and it never recovered its previous prestige when it was later settled by people from the neighboring towns. Though only a small part of its previous glory was preserved, today Arbanassi is a famous tourist destination. The unique architecture of its houses, the seven churches rich in mural paintings and the beautiful nature, attract thousands of Bulgarian and foreign tourists, historians and architects.

The authentic atmosphere of Arbanassi

The unique appearance of Arbanassi is created by the characteristic architecture of its houses and churches. The houses resemble small fortresses surrounded by high defensive stone walls but they reveal to the visitor cozy and richly decorated rooms on the inside. The Arbanassi churches with scarce or missing decoration of their facades, stone walls with narrow windows and massive wooden doors hide marvelous murals on their inside walls. These murals are a remarkable evidence for the development of Bulgarian art in this period. Read a more extensive article on Arbanassi in the Discover Bulgaria part of our site.
